Home Sustainability Assessors to harvest rainwater.

Home Sustainability Assessors are the latest recruits on the frontline of Australia's rainwater harvesting movement following the release of a new guide.

The guide allows tank suppliers to offer householders up to ten per cent discounts by helping Assessors to improve the efficiency of both home evaluations and installation for rainwater tanks.

Depending on the householders needs, this discount incentive is expected to increase rainwater tank sales. The guide also promises to bolster sales by allowing Assessors to include rainwater harvesting as an option for householders across the country.

Other areas of home sustainability advice provided by Assessors include heating and air conditioning, water heating, lighting, refrigeration, cooking, entertainment and now water efficiency.

Greater customer satisfaction could also flow from the guide because it has been designed to equip Assessors with better on- site advice tailored to the individual rainwater harvesting needs of householders.

Dennis Hensman of Energy Efficient Building initiated this resource after recognizing the need to upgrade and extend Assessor training to include rainwater harvesting.

This development means Assessors can improve household rainwater harvesting and efficiency, offer discount incentives, and provide customer satisfaction.

Following its recent release, the guide as now been delivered to the trained Assessors.

Targeting the only national rainwater harvesting network in Australia, Dennis approached Stephen Collis of Modtank to develop the water harvesting component for the Assessors guide. The Assessors guide combines practical household information with technical rainwater tank design and installation – handbook HB230.

Home Sustainability Assessors and the Public can access this brilliant document and overview by visiting Modtank in the "Water Harvesting" or "Eco Assessments Tools" section within www.energyefficientbuilding.com.au

Set to feature at designEX 2009 in April, this new modular water tank will release the child within.

There’s something about this water tank that appeals to that Lego-obsessed kid inside. Designed by Aussie brothers, Stephen and Martin Collis – both mechanical engineers – Modtank is a versatile, modular urban water storage unit.

The 77-litre tanks fit together much like Lego™ blocks, or those neat little freezer ice cubes, and can be fitted upright at 50cm in height or on their side at 30cm – making them versatile and allowing them to take advantage of under-utilised space.

“The light-weight modules connect together using a patented interlocking spigot and recess that permits water circulation between each part, while assuring stability as a complete tank,” says co-inventor Martin Collis.

Despite the obvious environmental benefits of capturing rain water, the Modtank system is manufactured using a blow-moulded process, using half the energy of regular tank production.

The blow moulding process also allows for the use of more durable and longer lasting tank construction.

Discovered by Sustainability Victoria at the Save Water Save Energy Expo, Modtank will be exhibiting at the 'Design for Sustainability (D4S)' space at designEX 2009 in April.

This relatively new company is bound to have grown adults playing with plastic blocks in gardens around the world... and helping the environment, in a very grown-up way, of course.

The Waterpro's industry night

The Geebung Polo Club provided a cosy space for landscapers to escape the wild weather outside. It rained and hailed but guests were treated to warm surrounds and delicious food and drinks. The Waterpro’s presentation was most interesting. The latest pumps and grey water systems from Rain One were on display, with experts to explain their use and advantages Of particular interest was Modtank, a new water tank system that works like Lego (Duplo really). Its inventor, Stephen Collis, explained how the 77 litre units click together in different formats making it very useful for under windows and in awkward spaces.

The meeting ended at around 9pm, but many lingered on enjoying the chance for a chat with their industry peers.
